IT Operations in a Biomedical Organization
Biomedical Research Institutions Information Technology Exchange
MD Anderson Cancer Center
Houston, TX
27–29 April 2005
Information technology plays an essential role in almost all
biomedical research. To be competitive, biomedical research
organizations must provide access to key information
technology as part of the institutional infrastructure
available to their researchers. At the same time, individual
investigators must be allowed maximum flexibility in the
pursuit of their research. Reflecting these differing needs,
biomedical institutions often have multiple decentralized
units delivering administrative, clinical, and research IT
services. In the past, these units could operate relatively
independently of each other. Now, concerns for security and
interoperability, and increased technical complexity, have
led to greater need for coordination among the various
facets of IT support for biomedical institutions.
IT Operations in a Biomedical Organization is the theme of this meeting. We will explore specific operational challenges in a few plenary presentations and group discussions. Then, smaller, self-organizing working groups will convene to consider issues of mutual interest. |
